Police Believe They Have Found Nick Garza Middlebury, Vermont - May 28, 2008 An autopsy began at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday on the man police believe is Nicholas Garza. Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley said he expected to have some preliminary results from the medical examiner by sometime Wednesday afternoon. Police pulled the body of the young man out of Otter Creek Tuesday night, and tentatively identified it as the Middlebury College freshman. The body was found just below the falls in the same area where crews have been focusing their search for some time now. Divers hoisted the body out of the water at the edge of a debris pile around 8:40 p.m. A spokesperson for the Middlebury Police Department says the body was wearing pants and in those pants they found a wallet with Garza's ID in it. It all started Tuesday around 4:00 p.m. Middlebury Police were doing some prep work for a planned weekend search. While they were testing the water for temperature and depth, Chief Tom Hanley spotted what he believed to be a body caught in the debris. www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=8386186&nav=menu183_2

Police positively ID body as Middlebury student; lay out theory
MIDDLEBURY — The night he vanished, Middlebury College student Nicholas Garza wandered almost due east across campus, toward the creek in which his body would be found almost four months later, instead of north in the direction of his dorm, police said Wednesday.
Authorities positively identified the body of the 19-year-old freshman of Albuquerque, N.M., through dental records Wednesday evening, a day after recovery crews removed his waterlogged remains from Otter Creek near downtown, said Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley.
An autopsy showed Garza suffered no injuries or trauma, the chief said, but the procedure revealed little about the cause of Garza’s death or clues as to why he followed a seemingly incongruous path in the minutes after 11 p.m. Feb. 5, the last time anyone reported seeing him.
A full report from the Medical Examiner’s Office, including toxicology results and a potential determination of the cause and manner of death, is expected in about six weeks, Hanley said.
“There is no sign of foul play,” the chief said at his station in Middlebury. “The next step is to put together all the information that we have. We’re hoping the medical examiner’s report could give us that keystone piece of evidence we need.”
Earlier this month, specially trained dogs from a Maine-based search-and-rescue organization tracked Garza on a winding route from Stewart Hall past campus buildings, through open fields, onto and then off the porch of a vacant house, and eventually to a spot where a thin trail bends sharply left, then right, to a narrow footbridge over Otter Creek near Middlebury Union High School, Hanley said.
Someone missing that turn, as authorities now believe Garza did, would plummet into the water, which on the cold night the student disappeared, sported slippery banks and a crust of ice over most of the deep channel, Hanley said.
“It’s a very, very slight grade, and then it drops off like this,” the chief said as he made a quick downward gesture with his outstretched left hand, “six feet right into the water.”

Body Positively Identified as Nicholas Garza The body pulled from Otter Creek Tuesday night has been identified as Nicholas Garza. According to Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley, the Medical Examiner positively identified the body through dental records. Garza disappeared from the Middlebury College campus last February. When rescue workers pulled the body out of creek Tuesday night, they found a form of identification on the body, which was still intact, but badly decomposed. Click here for a look at previous Nicholas Garza stories. The following is a statement released late Tuesday night, from Natalie Garza, mother of Nick Garza. "Nicholas had a wit that was quick smart and sure, but moreover, humble. He cherished his family, especially his younger brother Damon. He was a serious young man; his integrity and perception of life were beyond his short years. Grace to him was given from birth, as was his love of literature, music, and philosophy. www.fox44.net/Global/story.asp?s=8386404

Information about Middlebury student Nicholas Garza '11
Wednesday, May 28, 2008
Today the Middlebury Police Department announced that it had received confirmation from the Office of the Medical Examiner in Burlington that the body the police recovered yesterday has been positively identified as Nicholas Garza ’11.
Nothing is harder for a college community than the loss of one of its own students.
Although our loss is terrible, it cannot compare to the pain that Nick’s mother Natalie and his family are experiencing now. Our deepest sympathies remain with them.
Nick came to Middlebury from Albuquerque, New Mexico, an alumnus of the Albuquerque Academy. He brought with him a passion for politics, debate, poetry, literature, hockey, and music; shortly after arriving on campus, Nick introduced and hosted his own rock show (“W.R.M. Sweet”) on WRMC, the College’s radio station. In his short time at the College he made numerous friends, and was known and liked by many.
A gathering in remembrance of Nick will take place on campus in the fall. Details to follow.
If you would like to write to Natalie and the Garza family, you can reach them at:
Natalie Garza 4224 Rancho Grande Place Albuquerque, NM 87124
Again, I want to thank the search crews and the police, particularly Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley, for all their work. I am extremely grateful to them for their dedication and all their efforts.
Ronald D. Liebowitz President Middlebury College
